Our Secretary's Open Letter

Dear Friends,

Have you ever thought of joining the Union of Catholic Mothers?
You probably know most of the present members by sight, if not by name and we are trying to increase our membership. At the moment, there are about 25 regular members and we feel this number is hardly representative of our Parish and we would like some new blood! We know that mothers of children under twelve years of age are usually involved in school activities and maybe cannot easily have an evening to spare. However, we believe that there are a number of mothers of older children who might welcome a night out with other women from the Parish.

We meet in St Joseph's Room every other Thursday at around 8 pm. We try to have a Speaker at one of our meetings during a given month and the other meeting is normally a social evening - when we entertain ourselves. Sometimes we have a quiz or a Bring and Buy and other times we play Bingo. Our speakers are not always serious (though some are) and have included a Belly Dancer, Salsa instruction. Line Dancer - quite a variety! From time to time, we visit other UCM Foundations in nearby locations and we also exchange visits with the Mothers' Union at St Mary's. Now and then, we go out together for a meal - these tend to be hilarious occasions and there is a growing list of restaurants who won't have us back!

Once a year we have a day retreat - usually at Stella Maris. Sister Mary Stephen always sends us off with a lot to think about. We all look forward to this day which we enjoy very much. Another annual trip is to Our Lady's shrine at Walsingham. The UCM has a special day - the first Tuesday in July, when Foundations from all over the country meet together.

We hope we have the reputation of being a caring - as well as a 'fan' group - we certainly like to think we are a valued parish organisation. Our members are involved in other Parish activities - flower arranging, eucharistic ministry, choir, repository, visiting the sick etc.

Do think seriously about joining us — we definitely want new ideas. If you wish to know more about us, please ask one of our members or Kieran (who knows which side his bread is buttered ...) will probably give us a good reference! If you wish to be accompanied at your first meeting - this too can be arranged.
We aim to give members lifts to and from meetings, if this is necessary and possible.
